Re:I know its rude to ask
Its not that good im still always skint! lol
No im lucky (although i do know others earning more than that doing similar!)
I started off in accounting assistant roles earning 14 - 16k by the time i was about 22, then I moved in charities and became a finance administrtor which after two years I was up to £18750 then i left and went into a charity accounting advisory role straight at £22k which I learned loads in! Its was a pilot year which didnt carry on due to lack of funding so I came across this one which is perfect!! went in at £23K and and they uplifted me to £25K after three months as they thought I wasnt beed paid enough!!!! I am responsible for everything financial tho and its hard work as have to comply with the SORP and normal accounting standards. theres also not many people in the area with specialised charity accounting knowledge so I had an advantage!
Before me they were paying for their auditors to send in a FA accountant and a MA accountant which was costing them an arm n a leg (double what i get paid) so they see me as excellent value!! But I must stress in the not-for-profit sector you can never have job security due to relying on external funding, it can be cut at a moments notice and if you carnt get anyone else to fund eventually its bye bye job  So its swings n roundabouts!

Re:I know its rude to ask
I work in the big smoke, aka London City. I went in aged 18 on 17000, and have two pay raises since then. Just turned 20 and am on 18300. Upon passing I am not sure what they are going to offer me, but other sectors can pay much more than that. Once passed I am leaving, as some places offer much more in the City for doing the exactly the same!!0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
Hey Samrog where did you learn your charity accounting, restricted, unrestricted, SORP and all that.
I'm happy with my job and have certainly saved them money but def need some training specifically on charity accounting. Nothing major but a good grounding would help.
You know of anything?0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
Im currently working as an accounts assistant and just sat the last of my AAT exams, in the west midlands area and only on 13500 it sounds so bad now hearing what you are all on0 -

I think I'm right in saying that you are the person I suggested should leave their job!
Honestly, you are not being paid what you're worth, I'm on 15,450 and I'm not being paid what I'm worth (I am an accounts processor, but I have responsibility for 2 whole accounts). Now I have my redunadancy looming, I will be looking in the region of 18k.
I am qualified, BTW.0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
There seems to be numerous opportunities out there to earn 18-20k following completion of AAT, obviously depending on experience to

Hi Ilearned on the job so to spreak (have 6 years experience of working for charities) then I went into an advsory role so 80% of my job time was spent researching and keeping up to date with charity accounting requirements including governance and all that!
I know CIFPA & ICAEW are now doing distance ;earning for their charity certificates but its expensive!

Re:I know its rude to ask
Samrog, CIPFA have sent an email through about a ceritificate in charity accounting, they ran a pilot scheme in London last year and are rolling it out from September. It says it costs £2k and it's 2 semesters.
I wasn't sure if that was 2 years or 2 terms -seems alot for 2 terms but not sure I could cope with another 2 years as I did foundation, intermediate and technician in 18 months and my heads cabbaged.
What do you think? 2 years or 2 terms?

Re:I know its rude to ask
This probably doesn't help but i am 27 and earn £31k a year in Portsmouth. I am a financial cost controller i know and do nothing with accounts in itself.....The AAT qualification hasn't really helped me in my pay rise achievements either it's purely been on merit, so i wonder are AAT qualifications all they live up to be??0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
I don't think it does help. It appears to be a personal observation based on your personal experiences. Same as me, the AAT qualification doesn't earn me anything and my salary is around the same as yours but I'm still glad I did it.0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
AAT doesn't have any bearing on me either.
Daft really!

Re:I know its rude to ask
Your salary really depends upon what job you are doing and where you are doing it, I started as trainee accountant at a firm in hertfordshire, and was paid a meesly £8750, I then progressed and got a few payrises, which took me up to £11125.
I didnt think that they were paying me enough so I left to work at a firm 5 mins down the road, earning £13000, I have been here a yr and a half and if am now on 14,750. If I pass my last set of exams for Technician level, I will be on £16000. Still not great but considering in 2003 I was only on £8750, I have almost doubled in pay.0 -
Re:I know its rude to ask
I moved over to a career in accounts almost 2 years ago starting on paltry £11,000, got my 2nd and present job not to long ago with a starting salary of £14500. Was just recently given a rise of £500 which came out of the blue, but I will be looking for another in the coming months.
Regarding the AAT and its worth......My current boss told me it was my studies and also my apparent confidence in the interview that clinched me the job, she also told me I beat out people with years of experience. So, I believe the AAT will show us the door but it is up to us to walk through it.
