hi

Hope someone can help!!!

I'm now ready to move on to becoming a certified accountant but I'm unsure as to which career path to choose. I've had mixed messages about ACCA and CIMA so I'm hoping that someone qualified or who knows a bit about these can give me some advice.

I currently work for the council but eventually I'd like to run my own business or work for myself any way. I've heard that ACCA is best for this but I understand that CIMA is better in local government.

If I choose CIMA would this hold me back in working for myself and if I choose ACCA would it hold me back within the council, considering it could be quite a few years before I branch out alone.

Cheers

If you go down the ACCA route and eventually qualify you will have heavy restrictions placed on you by ACCA in terms of what you can actually as a self-employed accountant. You can only practise as an ACCA when you have completed 3 years post-qualified experience which has been endorsed by a qualified accountant and undertaken further training to obtain your practising certificate.

A lot of students qualifying in AAT wish to set up on their own. Unfortunately, ACCA do not recognise AAT and you will only be allowed to do a certain amount of bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns and such like. You will not be able to do accounts, tax and prepare information for which a 3rd party would place reliance on.

CIMA may have different rules on practising. However, I thought CIPFA was more geared towards the Council. ACCA and CIMA are not exclusively reserved for certain career routes. I'm sure ACCA qualifieds and CIMA qualifieds would work within the council.

    Kind regards
