Hi all,

I know these questions have probably been asked hundreds of times, but here goes!:

I have just finished my last exam in June so *fingers crossed* will qualify in August! but want to know how i go about becoming, a member, or full member or member in practice (i am confused about what all the names mean!)

I want to start my own little practice from home, just maybe 10-16 hours per week, but i have never done any bookkeeping before so nervous about just putting an advert in the paper because if someone came to me i would not know what to do!

Please help! is it really hard? i have not got any accounting computer packages either, could anyone recommend one?

Thank you for reading if you get this far!!

Eack. :D

Have you read the AAT's guidelines on professional ethics?

You cannot advertise to the general public for a service that you have no idea how to do.

Passing the exams is only the starting point en route to becoming a member in practice. You need to build up experience of how to do the work before offering your services to the public.

I would suggest working in general practice for a few years to gain that knowledge and experience before building up your own clients.

It will save you sleepless nights in the long run!

    Hi Eack,
I live in Swindon too. I passed my AAT Technician stage a fair few years ago - it then took me a couple of years to become a full member, and I have just recently become a member in practice, so that I can also start my own book-keeping business. As Dean pointed out experience is key, and in both of the processes I mention above, I needed to demonstrate my experience to the AAT.
You didn't mention what you do for your full-time employment?
Please pm or email me and we can talk further. I don't want to make this post too long - and also I have a bored 8 month old on my lap trying to help me type!!!
Good luck with the exam results.
    Lucy.
