It would take several years to become a manager.

You would have to be patient. Qualify first and gain practical experience.

    There are no short cuts!

I agree with Sara. Get some years under your belt first. Learn all aspects of the job because when you become a manager you will be expected to pass on your knowledge to your juniors.
It's a long slow process and the pressure will be very intense when you get there.

I don't think it matters whether you go to a big firm or a little firm, you will only become a manager when the people you work for and with consider that you are competant enough to do the job. It is easier to get pigeon holed and specialise with a big 4 company but you would be better becoming an all rounder with a small to medium sized company so that you have a full working knowledge of the whole profession. You also need *Man management* skills and these come with training and more especially, with experience. You won't become a manager overnight.
I wish you good luck but don't be over zealous, it could hold you back.

In order to become a manager of a practice would require a lot of technical comprehension. The AAT (whilst an excellent qualification) will only introduce you to the variety of issues which you are likely to face in your every day working life as an accountant in practice.

A manager has to demonstrate an abundance of key responsibilities which they have to undertake. For example:

    - technical competence in audit/accounting standards
    - tax advisory requirements
    - staff issues such as when and how to delegate
    - client issues e.g. what the client wants and expects from the firm
    - in house conformity with relevant institute regulations e.g. ensuring letters of engagement are up to date
    - budget planning for prospective new client
    - audit planning and delegation and how delegation is to take place
    - software support issues
    - fee preparation and what to do with under/over recovery
    - letter preparation, the contents, understandability and the like.

All the above skills take a long time to develop and cannot happen just by virtue of doing the AAT. It is unlikely you will start a practice career as a manager if you aren't unable to demonstrate the skills (which are only a summary) above.

In terms of career advancement, I would do what your peers have said above and let your career progress itself naturally. Try and go in at semi-senior level and work your way up first. Don't jump in and be out of your depth.

    regards

    Re:accounting vacancy

I do work in practice at manager level. It was a position that took a great deal of hard work and did not happen overnight nor did it happen straight after I qualified. It takes a long time and I had to start at junior level to work my way up.

You seem to want to run before you can walk. Managerial positions in practice demand a lot of work and are not easily accessible if you do not have the required experience. In order to gain this experience you have to start at a relatively junior level and work your way upwards. The AAT qualification does not entitle you to the right to demand such a position it helps you build your career and gives you opportunities to help you on the path to become senior.

I do not know your background or your age or indeed your experience. I would re-iterate that it is highly unlikely, if indeed impossible, that you would secure a practice manager's position if (a) you do not have the required qualities and (b) if your experience is sub-standard to that required.

I get the impression that you are just a wind-up merchant and I think that my esteemed collegues and I have got better things to do with our time than pander to you.
I would suggest that you grow up, accept the advice that you have been given and start asking sensible questions.

justly, justly, justly... where do I begin?

So far you have demonstrated all the attributes of someone who will always remain a subordinate and none of those required to become a manager.

You don't become a manager merely based on passing a qualification but rather through years of hard work and dedication as well as possessing a multitude of other skills.

    These include;

Understanding; to manage other people, you must first be able to communicate and understand them fully. Pardon me if I'm wrong here, but do I sense correctly that English is maybe not your first language? If you intend to become a manager where English is indeed the primary language, you must first be absolutely fluent in it, not just the words themselves but the odd phrases and colloquialisms in everyday use. Without this fluency, you will always struggle to understand others and they'll in turn struggle to understand you.

Respect; you may well become the manager of someone else but if you lack respect for your peers or for those you control, you will not have their respect in turn either. This loss - or lack of - respect will eventually lead to loss of your own control and in all likelihood, ultimately your position.

Experience; managers are usually only appointed after years of working in various roles and therefore most able to contribute a wide range of ideas to any given situation. You do not gain experience by passing exams, short-cutting or fast tracking but only by years of hard work and there is no other substitute for it.

Knowledge; you must at least be able to understand what your subordinates are doing or are capable of. If you do not, how can you check the quality of their work? Alternatively, if they eventually realise they know more than you do, you'll be on a very slippery slope downhill and likely to swap roles.

I'm sorry justly, but you seem to be lacking in these quite basic cornerstones of management and this isn't an even exhaustive list. Take the advice you've been given here and instead of disrespecting it, absorb it and go away a better person. You are NOT management material at the moment but that's not to say that in future years you won't be.

    Regards,

    Robert

I also be manager. Please tell how me get you job. I am 33 and qualified nearly done. My Inglesh is good very and I competent in everything in whole wide world. I manage small government of Molvania (the land untouched by modern dentistry). I great heroine in Molvania. Me give jobs to the street rats. Ha ha ha just kidding.

How can someone expect to be a manager overnight. They make me laugh. I have been working in finance for four years now and my company is training me up. This seems to be the way to go. That Justly person sounds like he would be a nightmare to work work for. Very arrogant.
