Hi there,

Taking the PEV and PCR exams in December, just started studying units 8&9 and feel completely lost. Feel like i'll never pass the exams!

Using the Osborne book which is good but how am i supposed to memorize 400 pages in 9 weeks!

Is anyone else in the same boat or is it just me?

Thanks,

Ben.

    Hi Ben

No you're not alone on this panic, I've been back at college three weeks and am panicking somewhat on both exams - mind you at least you've got books, ours have yet to arrive so I'm trying to take down as many notes in class as possible. I've got my fingers crossed that they'll have arrived by tomorrow when I get to college but we'll have to wait and see. Apparently there is some cross over between the two units but without sight of the books I can't confirm that this is the case. Don't stress just start plodding your way through!

I hoper you don't mind me picking half of one of your sentences and quoting:
how am i supposed to memorize 400 pages in 9 weeks!

Please don't try to memorise the text book.

Instead learn the techniques and be able to apply them to the sort of tasks that might come up:
    PEV may test
      Variance Analysis
      Ratio Analysis

    PCR may test
      Planning Budgets
      Control Budgets

NVQs test your ability to demonstrate competence rather than learning off by heart the content of text books

    Hi Ben,

Don't worry, both myself and a friend from college are feeling exactly the same way! Like, there is no way we are going to pass these two exam in such little time! I thought passing the FRA was a miracle!

I think the key is, to basically work your butt off for next 9 weeks, and hope to pass, thats what I'm doing! I can't afford to fail!

    Good Luck

    Re:PEV & PCR panic!

I can certainly sympathise, I found PEV pretty hard. It took me quite a while to really get my head round it. On the other hand I found PCR quite straightforward.

In addition, I found the Osborne book for PEV to be surprisingly poor - the one occasion I've found BPP to better. You should also check out the AAT support booklet which I found very helpful.

Anyway, my class did PCR, PEV and DFS in not much more than nine weeks and we all passed - so it can be done. Working your butt off is pretty much required though!

    Thanks for the replies everyone,

Starting to slowly get my head around variances and the different costing methods which are troubling me the most.

Things like ratios and budgets on PCR i seem to be(fingers crossed) relatively ok with but the PEV stuff requires a lttle more practice!

    Re:PEV & PCR panic!

It took me a good while to really understand all the variances - I think this is one area where the Osbourne book is worse than useless - but I got there in the end.

I don't think I ever completely mastered the difference between marginal and absorption costing. Conceptually I got the idea but in when it came to putting it into practice my head started spinning.

Oh well, all ancient history now :)
