Contra Entry

Hi
I am doing a question called Miss Anne Teak (drafting financial statements)and I am having trouble understanding why the contra entries are included.
I understand contra but I cannot see how you would know to include it if the question does not say to?!
Please help and I hope i have made it clear enough.
