One of my friends is a surveyor, and is currently working on buildings and infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics. With all he knows, he thinks it may be bad for our economy in the long run.
I cant wait to have an Olympic games staged in our great capital, and I wondered what everyone else thought about it. Will anyone be attending any events in particular?

London Olympics 2012
I won't be attending any since I'm not really into the whole Olympic movement. I think it's great that people unite but not sure about this. I've read that Montreal - who held the games in 1976 - are still feeling the economic effects thirty years later having taken decades to foot the bill.
Also giving the 2008 games to China with their appalling humanitarian record was shocking. There's a story that years ago that they had to clear up their homeless situation before they were awarded the games. They did and apparently now China has very few homeless people. I don't think they rehoused them...
And then every four years we always hear the same things. Why can't we ever win medals in swimming/basketball/hockey/triathlon etc. Perhaps if there was an Olympic event in PlayStation, Britain might at least win a medal? LOL!

Some of the events are being held just down the road from me, but I doubt if I will go.0 -

At the last few Olympic Games, we have actually done well:
G S B Tot Pos
1952 1 2 8 11 18th
1956 6 7 11 24 8th
1960 2 6 12 20 12th
1964 4 12 2 18 10th
1968 5 5 3 13 10th
1972 4 5 9 18 12th
1976 3 5 5 13 13th
1980 5 7 9 21 9th
1984 5 11 21 37 11th
1988 5 10 9 24 12th
1992 5 3 12 20 13th
1996 1 8 6 15 36th
2000 11 10 7 28 10th
2004 9 9 12 30 10th
Much better than in 1996 anyway. Yes I hear you say that there are now more sports, but I'm sure if Britain got 10 golds at their own Olympics they would be quite happy.0 -
Re:London Olympics 2012
Every Olympic year we see and hear the same old argument that we perform poorly due to lack of investment in our athletes, but aren't we the fourth or fifth richest company on the globe? Surely that tells us something - that's it's not just about investment but rather the fact that the Brits are crap at just about everything irrespective of the loot available?
For example, we pay our 'top' footballers hundreds of thousands a year - even millions to some of them - and they have access to all the best facilities money can buy yet they get outperformed by part timers earning fractions of their wages. To me, we could throw every single last penny on the planet towards these sportsmen but nothing on earth can buy them the national pride they clearly lack in order to make them perform better.
Bah!
