I would be very grateful if somebody could please advise me on the accounting qualifications applicable in Australia. I am starting my AAT technician stage in March and intend to haveit all done by the time I move to Australia. I am thinking of carrying on after AAT but would like to choose an "appropriate direction" considering the australian market. Is the AAT a worldwide professional qualification?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Carole

Hi Carole,

The AAT is an NVQ level 4. In Australia this will qualify you for exemption from the first two years of the Advanced Diploma in Accounting. It's a 4 yr full time course at a TAFE college.

On completion of the TAFE course and some work experience you are entitled to join the National Institute of Accounting (NIA). I don't think this will allow you to practice.

If you want to qualify fully here first then I suggest the ACCA or ICA qualifications. If you have a degree and fortunate enough to get a training contract within a practice then I would advise you to do ICA as it's less time consuming to convert to the Oz equivalent (CPA).

Whatever route you choose you will need to study Australian Business Tax and Australian Company Law at university level.

Finally, when you get there wear sun-screen and a wide brimmed hat: the sun is glorious but has a mean streak.

Best Wishes

Alexander0 -
