I run a small accountancy practice from an office at home as well as being in full time employment (not in accountancy). We offer the full range of services-bookeeping, VAT,tax, accounts, payroll - to (mainly) sole traders and partnerships and have done so for nine years. My wife does most of the day to day books, paye vat etc and I do the end of year and tax work as well as the more complex consultancy issues. It is fortunate that the busiest time (dec/jan) coincides with the long christmas break.

The arrangement means we don't have to actively seek new clients (we have less than 12) and can tailor the workload to suit my employed/self employed status and my wife's wholly elf employed status

It also guards against redundancy/loss of job as I have recently left my 'day' job and now have the option of finding another or expanding our own business.
I like the mix of a full time job not directly in accountancy (but usually in something allied) and the self employed work in accountancy-makes for variety
Hope this helps
Gerard Somers
Hi

I work part-time in an accounts office assisting the financial controllers. I would really like to supplement this work by doing accounts for small businesses / sole traders.

My question really is how do I go about making this happen? Should I advertise, how do I know what services to offer, how much can I charge?

I questioned an external verifier today to say that the AAT whilst providing the ethical guidelines, etc, they do not give any guidance on how to go about becoming self-employed.

Any help and or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
