Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice,

A friend of mine is a hairdresser in a well known salon in our city centre, and needs to do his self assessment on line,but has asked me if he can use the following;
Travelling expenses to work and back
Clothes for work
Meals

Any feedback would be appreciated, many thanks in advance.

    Travelling expenses to work and back - You can not claim for travelling to work and back.

    Clothes for work - You may be able to recover cost of any clothing but only if specific to the job (eg shirt with company logo).

    Meals - This would not be reclaimable if only based at one salon.

    I would also advise that if they only work at the one salon it is doubtful that they should be self employed. However, that is a problem for the salon and not your friend.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the info, its much appreciated....I believe from what he has said in the past that most salons now rent thier chairs and charge the stylists for using thier products etc.

    It was my understanding that HMRC are very much against rent a chair schemes and I always try and advise against such schemes when advising my salon clients.
