Minimum requirements for Ltd Co

A few months ago I set up a Ltd Co for a client. Girlfriend and boyfriend are directors and hold 50 shares each. The girl is also secretary.
They've spent a lot of time setting up the business together but haven't really started trading yet properly. They're now possibly breaking up and she'll continue with the company, I don't think he wants anything to do with it. I've had a look on Companies house website and it says something about small Ltd Co's no longer requiring a secretary - does anyone know whether the girl can just be the sole director and buy her (ex)boyfriend's shares from him? I've checked the memorandum of association and there's nothing there saying that this company has to have a secrectary.
