So......
Why is a bird called a bird........0 -
Rather boringly, they're called flies because they fly.fly (n.)
O.E. fleoge, from P.Gmc. *fleugjon (cf. O.S. fleiga, O.N. fluga, M.Du. vlieghe, Ger. Fliege "fly); lit. "the flying (insect)" (cf. O.E. fleogende "flying"), from same source as fly (v.1). Originally "any winged insect" (hence butterfly, etc.); long used by farmers and gardeners for any insect parasite.

Because it walks????0

Because a "buzz in the ointment" doesn't have the same ring to it.0

Why is a boxing ring called that when it is patently rectangular?
Answer me that one then..0 -
Curiously, the usual OE word for bird is fugol which is clearly derived from the same source as 'fly'. Our word 'bird' derives from OE bridd meaning young bird or chick - the source of bridd is, apparently, not known.0

The name ring is an atavism from when contests were fought in a roughly drawn circle on the ground. The name ring continued with the Jack Broughton rules in 1743, which specifed a small circle in the centre of the fight area where the boxers met at the start of each round. The first square ring was introduced by the Pugilistic Society in 1838. That ring was specified as 24 feet (7.3 m) square and bound by two ropes. For these and other reasons, the boxing ring is commonly referred to as the "square circle."
