Is is possible/feasible to take the Intermediate route without local colleges/home learning?

I'm thinking I could buy books (Osbourne, Kaplan, etc) and register, via AAT, for intermediate after passing the foundation (which I'm currently studying through college) which I think would allow me permission to take the intermediate exam.

Advantages are that it's a lot cheaper. Disadvantages are that there is no support network and I have to find somewhere to perform the simulations?

I'm finding the foundation relatively easy, although I know the jump to intermediate is quite steep.

Any feedback would be appreciated/welcome.
