Very messy previous accounts

Hi,

Just got a clients previous company accounts from their accountant and
they are a complete mess. All I got was a TB and the previous filed
accounts.
Nothing is reconciled and it is proving extremely difficult to get any further info.

There are credit balances for VAT and payroll liabilities which seem to have been
carried forward in the accounts for a long time! Their payroll and VAT is all up to
date as we have done the bookkeeping for the last several months.

Any thoughts on what would be the best thing to do with these credit balances if
no more information can be gained from the previous accountant?
