What does it stand for? From a layman's point of view, what are the main advantages of having it displayed after your name.

Maat was the Ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation.
Displaying it after your name means everyone will treat you as a god.0 -

Over the years some employers have treated me like a doormat - and I once resigned from a post telling them I held a professional qualification being MAAT at the time - and I refused to be treated like one!!- I've never looked back and I'm proud to say subsequent employers have respected my skills and qualifications. I'm now FMAAT and MIP - hope that give's the layman something to think about ... :-)0

Literally, Member of the Association of Accounting Techinicans, but I suspect that wasn't what you were after.
It shows that you are a member of a credible professional organisation, have passed fairly challenging exams and accrued adequate work experience. (also, have learned words like "accrued")
It can also indicate that you are on your way towards qualification with a CCAB member.0
