Hi

Would appreciate some advice for travelling from South East to Barnstaple in North Devon.

Would you go.....
M23, M4, M5

or

A27 to Southampton then across country on A roads..

Thanks

depends what time of the day it is really - i would probably go m4 way though as a27 if you get stuck behind anything is a pain and getting from south east across country on the m4 is pretty quick

I agree: the M4 between London and Bristol is quick and easy. The M5 going south-west can be very busy, but generally its holiday traffic going to the West Country.

Leaving at 6am tomorrow morning..(I reckon it will take about 5.5 hours...?)

Supporting my "Number 2" son who is picking up an old Peugeot 205 GTi which he is going to do up....
Hopefully it will make it back....

What we do for our loved ones......

I'd probably favour the M25/M4/M5 route although another option would be M25/M3/A303 and pick up the M5 at Taunton. This time of year, without the tourist traffic, it's probably just as quick and a nicer drive than being on a motorway all the time.

Can you not just stick him on a train and let him drive back alone? (surely if he's old enough to drive, he'll be able to cope?)

What with engineering works on a Saturday, 4/5 changes, strikes, we came to the conclusion it was better to drive down.

My theory was that I would worry all day at home so might as well go with him..

So decision was made and he was happy.
Plus we get to stop at Southampton on the way back and see my lovely 7 month old granddaughter. (Thats the plus part.)

    Thanks for all your replies.

Have got a Sat Nav but its just a basic one

It will be fine, (I keep telling myself) its just got too big in my head, and the weather forecast doesnt help.

Going to be pretty hairy in these parts over the weekend apparently though tonight looks like the worst of it and tomorrow might not be too bad. Raining heavily here now and wind picking up, time to batten down the hatches.

You could drop in on Robert :)

I would take the A27 to Southampton and then go across and up from there. Chichester tends to snarl up with all of the roundabouts but leaving that early you should sail through.

My Sat Nav lies and so If I am travelling a long way I use the AA planner

    http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

Have a safe journey, I do not think that the weather is going to be kind though.

Jesus. Murder capital of the UK then...

I'd do as Julia says and do the first part via the A27 but allow enough time to get past Worthing, Arundel and those million fricking roundabouts at Chichester... Leaving Hastings at midnight should see you at least get to Portsmouth by six.

    Hi

    We made it....!!

Went the M3, M25, M4, M5. Left a bit later to give the worst weather time to go away.
Left at 12.30 and arrived at 6pm.
No delays, no floods, no trees down, no tailbacks.....windy and lots of spray....amazing journey.
Came back via A303 and Salisbury then M27 and A27. (After a night at the Travelodge..)

Old car made it back....(lost my bet....)

He is happy with it....Loud exhaust though.......Going to make it into a Track car....

Thanks for all your advice.....Think I will put his "Keep" up now..

ps...Robert....sorry we didnt pop in to say HI....!
