So, inheritance tax is frozen at ยฃ325,000
    VAT increase on Jan1 confirmed
    CT frozen at 21%
basic pensions up by 2.5%(April 2010)
Child & Disability benefit up by 1.5%(April 2010)
Public sector pay rises frozen at 1% for 2 years from 2011
Contributions to public sector pensions reduced and staff contributions to be increased.
Electric cars exempt from company tax for 5 years
Bingo duty cut from 22% to 20%
50p per month tax on phonelines to pay for new superbroadband
NI contributions increased by 0.5% from 2011
    to name but a few.

He did state that he is raising the threshold for NI and that anyone earning ยฃ20k or less would pay no extra NI

At the risk of starting an argument, why should all fulltime employees face an increase yet again in NI contributions whilst some part time employees pay nothing into the system.
The system is set up so that supermarkets and other employers of part time staff escape NI(employers tax).
Why should sole traders have to pay a weekly "stamp" plus a percentage of their profits into the system whilst supermarkets pay nothing towards part-time staff?
Isn't it time for the Govt to look at part time employers paying something between 5 @ 8% "employers" tax?

this was more for tax exam purposes but totally agree FG the system is wrong and change is needed.

I can see that there are arguments for encouraging employers to take on part-time workers to help labour market flexibility and that sort of thing but in general I'm in agreement that there should be greater parity.

As a sole trader myself, I keep pondering if the benefits of being a employee of limited company outweigh the hassle involved. When I've done the sums in the past the answer has usually been that I would be better but not enough to make it really worthwhile. I might have another look if the NI increase affects me significantly.
