I have just been approached to complete a Tax Return for a new client. Does anyone know how long HMRC is currently taking to process 64-8's?

A long time...
That's if they haven't "mis-placed" them...0 -
If you are using third party software then you don't need a 64-8 in place to file a return.Regards,

With the 3rd party software will it always be the case that you won't need a 64-8 or is it a loop hole that will be closed?0

I don't believe it is a loophole.
The 64-8 is there to authorise HMRC to communicate with you as the agent about the clients affairs. They will accept the return but will not then send you any further correspondence until a 64-8 is in place.Regards,

Talking about 64-8s actually; i was on the phone to HMRC VAT about a client and they couldn't talk to me because no 64-8, but they are quite happy to write us letters regarding the clients current VAT & tax investigation...0

Don't hold me to this, but apparently HMR&C have drafted in extra staff for January only to be able to process 64-8s within 24 hours.
Although if this is true, why can't they continue it all year round? It can't take that many extra employees...0 -
That might be why everytime I can, I get asked can you hold and then they check with a manager. Unexperienced staff slowing down all the others0

I to have has many problems. The CAA Team said my 64-8 form was stamped on December 18th but I still have received nothing from them and as a result I can't register for the HMRC online services as an agent
What software can use to get round not being registered as an agent?
Thanks0 -
There are many different Tax Return software.
I use an integrated suite from Digita which is fairly expensive in comparison to others.
Tax Calc... http://taxcalc.com/
Drummohr... http://www.drummohr.com/
PTP... http://www.ptpsoftware.co.uk/software__services/ptp_tax_return.aspx
Plus othersRegards,

I will look into those
Many thanks
