Yes you will have to register as an MIP.

You will be limited to the areas in which you are licensed which will be based upon you experience.

    Hi Stu

you can do self employed work now as a student so long as you dont advertise your services in connection with the AAT. Also you should abide by the AAT guidelines on Professional Ethics (which are on the website) and register with the HMRC for compliance with the Money Laundering Regulations 2007. you should probably also get some Public Imdemnity Insurance

there are some support materials on this at aat.org.uk/studentsinpractice

Once you become a full member, ie when you have finished your studies since your experience has been approved you can apply for a license and set up your own accountancy practice, this means you can take advantage of all the benefits on offer from the AAT's scheme for members in practice including
applying for areas in which you are competent eg bookeeping, payroll VAT etc.
there is an online toolkit with sample contracts and articles and access to the business support helpline.

You can do bookkeeping up to Trial balance and that is it I'm afraid. That is ACCA's rules regardless of your qualification until you hold a practising certificate with them.

Thats for your comments. The thing is also that i dont have experience in practice, so if i want to work as a member in practice i'd be better off going to ICB or IAB!!

If you don't have any experience in practice, it's not fair to your prospective clients to understake work for them until you have some experience. That's why the AAT require you to have experience before they will grant MiP status.

If you want to get a practicing cert under a different body, then I don't think you can become a MAAT - as any MAAT will need a MiP licence to allow them to practice.

    Agree with Jenni,

I think you would find you would have to resign from being a MAAT as you would need a practising license which they may not issue to you.

This would be a sad waste of your studies and time and effort.

I also agree that having no experience is not going to help your clients. Take some time to gain some experience and it will help you a lot more in your venture.
