Hi,
I've just completed my 1st year at foundation level and I am now debating wether or not to continue onto intermediate level, I suppose it all depends on my exam result.
Can anyone tell me what its like, I mean is it a big jump from foundation to intermediate work wise ? I've struggled initially with debits & credits but thankfully I managed to come to grips with it just in time for the exam.

    HI
Obviously the work becomes more difficult.
But I found the progression fairly easy.
FRA is just taking the double entry, you have learned in foundation, a stage further and producing an extended trial balance.
The one which is different from earlier levels is ECR. Where you are dealing with costing, i.e. how to determine the cost of producing goods. This is in some ways quite complex.Lots of formula to remember. But it does eventually sink in.
The remainder of intermediate is made up of a unit on working with computers and another on reports and returnse.g.VAt returns etc
If you are prepared to put in the time it shouldnt be a problem.
Why not give it a try?
What have you got to lose.
I have just done my intermediate level exams and have done the foundation level the year before. I would say that it very much depends on your college and tutors.

My foundation course was a pig's ear and my tutor and college were not that great. Consequently I felt like my foundation year was self taught and quite hard work.

Intermediate is more work, but I've had great teachers and good friends at college, so actually I've found it easier than last year. The first year's knowledge and understanding made this year's course work much easier.

I also struggled with debits and credits in foundation but the intermediate reinforces this. I also found everything I'd learnt in the intermediate came together just in time before the exams.

If you can make sure you have good support and tutors I'd recommend to go for it.

Good luck!

For a while i did find Intermediate a jump from Foundation and you get a totally new subject to learn on Costing, reports and returns. For me unfortunately my college was useless and like the other guy said on here i had to basically self teach for most of the course where the 1st year was excellent.

My advice to you is whether you get homework or not make sure you do it, we hardly got any this year and our lecturers only kept us for no more than 1 1/2 to 2hrs with a 20min break and we were supposed to be there from 6.30 to 9.30pm

Definately keep on top of things and do questions that are in the back of your tutorials and workbooks, set yourself (our college used the Osbourne books) keep testing your knowledge and practising your technique and im sure you will find intermediate ok. When it came to revising for exams especially the centrals, i made a list of my weak areas and practised on them - writing notes, doing questions and for me you cant bet doing past papers as well! sorry if i bored you but hope it will be of use to you in making your decision.

best of luck woteva u decide and with ur exam result

Steve

For what it's worth - I have just finished my foundation exam and am definately going on to Intermediate if my employers will allow.

I really struggled with Foundation to start with, thought I'd never get the hang of Debits and Credits but literally , about six weeks ago - it just clicked. I can't believe what trouble I had - it seems so logical - now!!!! I know that Intermediate isn't going to be a walk in the park, but hey, the only person you are doing this for is you. You will be the one who benefits from it, both financially and esteem wise.. Go for it mate!!

    Hi,

Thanks very much to all of you for your advice. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go onto intermediate, it all now depends on my exam result and I am now also looking for a new job as working for the family business hasn't worked out quite as planned. So I'll have to see what my potential employer thinks, WHEN I FIND ONE !!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing that I have found by doing this course has been not just the learning aspect but also meeting new friends and also all the helpful advice on the AAT forums
