BRITISH TEAMS SWEEP 2010 EFINANCIALCAREERS INVESTMENT CHALLENGE SPONSORED BY BANK OF AMERICA MERRILL LYNCH
Six teams of budding British traders – four of them from Warwick University - reached the finals of this year’s Investment Challenge from eFinancialCareers.com, the leading global careers site for financial professionals.
The Challenge tested finance students’ investment acumen, in which they competed with fellow students from universities across Europe, allowing them potentially to kick-start their banking careers with a summer internship ahead of graduating. The overall winners were Team Alpha, a group of five undergraduate students from Warwick University, who received prize money of £2500. Members of all eight teams who made it through to the finals also won the chance to apply for a 2011 Summer Internship with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Over 200 teams from across Europe participated in this year’s first round. The eFinancialCareers Investment Challenge, sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, began in January with a trading game, where each team was given a virtual £10 million fund to invest in the European financial markets over a month.
Based on the results the field was then narrowed to 10 teams, who were then tasked with preparing an investment report on the trading game, as well as creating a portfolio proposal on opportunities in the commodities market.
The final round took place in April, when the eight top-performing teams spent a week with Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London. There they networked with established financial professionals and learned more about the bank’s different divisions, as well as producing a commodities index targeted at institutional investors which was judged by a Dragon’s Den-style jury of three professionals from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Iain Small, Head of Sales EMEA at www.eFinancialCareers.com.
James Bennett, Managing Director of eFinancialCareers.com commented:
“The Investment Challenge aims to identify some of the best and brightest of tomorrow’s bankers. Initiatives such as the Investment Challenge allow us to create an environment where the talents of up-and-coming financial professionals can be nurtured ahead of them entering the workforce.”
