Contributions to an occupational pension scheme need to be deducted from the gross salary. Only the employee contributions mind you not the employers! Although I would like to suggest that as a tax break for the Tories!! :)

For personal pension payments you add the GROSS payment to the basic rate band to allow tax relief if you are a higher rate tax payer ONLY. Hmmmm the Tories should have a suggestion box :)

In Box 1 enter the amount from the P45 or P60
If its a occupational scheme the pension contribributions will have been deducted at source before PAYE so on P45 or P60 it will have already taken this into account
For the personal ones you still enter the amount from the P45 in addition you add the personal gross pension contribtions onto TR4 Box 1
