Bad Debt relief

Hi All
Does anyone know if you still have to advise the customer, in writing, if you intend to write their bad debt off and reclaiming the VAT element? It’s just that I know it used to be the case, but not sure if policies have since changed.
I did try to se if I could find the information on the HMR&C site, but couldn’t find anything relating to it.
Regards

I've just done this myself, but without informing the customer of your claim to VAT relief (confirmed on guidance from a Chartered Accountant).
Here is a link confirm that (about a quarter way down the page) although obviously not a Government updated one.
