I own a trading company with a turnover of £7m. Our auditor died recently, and we have been cold-called by a member of CIOT and AAT, who has offered to do the audit for £20000, compared with £6000 under the dead auditor. He is 70 and very impressive, but admits that in the last 10 years he has only done very small audits. He says we won't get a lower offer, and his quote will double if we don't sign up by Saturday. He wants the full fee upfront in cash. I am a bit dubious about signing up, but my managing director thinks I am being ultra-cautious. Does anyone have any comments, please?

I can assure you that this is genuine. Why should I make it up? Incidentally, the auditor tells me that he is qualified to do audits under a special dispensation for elderly members of AAT.

But isn't this exactly what professional cover is for? If you drop dead suddenly there's someone who can cover your work for you? So why can't the OP use the dead auditors professional cover?0 -
