Hi

You may or may not be aware that the above bodies are currently engaged in early stage merger discussions. The news ahs so far been reported on www.accountingweb.co.uk and www.accountancyage.co.uk, as well as the websites of the respective institutes and the ACCA.

The ACCA are not currently involved, possibly do a certain hostile take over they attempted a few years back. So far the ACCA's only comment is one of general defence for themselves.

Just wondered what the opinions of students/members of AAT are? Should the AAT merge in with them?

Neil

Merger - CIMA, CIPFA, ICAEW.
As an AAT member, and CIMA student, I have to say that this is the first that I'd heard of any merger between the 3 accounting bodies. I think that it would be a shame for these 3 institutions to merge, as each has distinctive specialisms, although from the general public's point of view, it may make the accounting profession as a whole slightly easier to understand, without so many different types of accountant.
What would the merger mean for current students & members of the 3 institutions? I suppose more information would need to be made available before commenting on whether or not it would be a good idea for the AAT to join in the merger.0 -
Merger - CIMA, CIPFA, ICAEW.
Hi

I think you're not alone in your issue with being a CIMA student and it being the first you've heard of it. People posting onthe CIMA forums have given the impression of being left in the dark by first hearing it on the accountingweb website.

Neil0 -

Hi Neil,

Not sure what benefit it would be to the AAT to join the new merger. The AAT is already sponsored by the three bodies involved in the merger or do you mean a more formal relationship i.e. the Technician body of the merged institute? This would isolate ICAS without giving much extra benefit.

Do you think the AAT qualification would gain from a more direct relationship?
0 -
Merger - CIMA, CIPFA, ICAEW.
Hi

I thin there would be pros and cons of the AAT merging (as the technician qual) of the merged institute. Although the AAT is currently sponsored by CIMA, CIPFA and ICAEW, would they receive as mush support from the merged body? I.e, would the new body provide 3 times the support of 1 body? Also, with regards to 'presence' in the profession the AAT is a junior body, would it be even 'more junior' if the bodies did merge?

Although the structure and content of ACCA's CAT qualification seems to place it behind the AAT, it does have the benefit of having direct support and represetation of a senior body. Regardless of how big the AAT becomes physically, the CCAB bodies will always dominate the profession.

Neil0
