Hurrah, we have a "Further Studies" section. Excellent.
I got my ATT text books the other day and started reading the Personal Tax text last night.
It's really, really daunting. The AAT book looks so mickey mouse in comparision; no disrespect to the AAT at all, its still not an easy exam, but the ATT is such a step up from AAT, and I'm finding it rather scary. I'm certainly not going to put in for 2 exams in the May sitting, I think that would be asking rather too much of myself!
The main difference I am finding is all the references to the relative laws. I see people reply on AWeb "Ah yes that's ITTOIA 2005 s 456" and I just think - how do you know that? Clearly it's to do with the difference in study at ATT and in Chartered exams whereby the legislation is a text you can refer to in the exams and so you need to get used to looking things up in them. It's just such a change from AAT (which I did 5 years ago) and the way I work in practice (which involves Tolley's, HMRC manuals and google, as opposed to the legislation itself), I don't know how easy I'm going to find it switching to this new way of looking at it....
Is anyone else studing Personal Tax at the moment? Does anyone fancy some study sessions on Skype?

Oh, when did that appear?
Think it's a wise decision to sit one exam in May. haven't done much studying myself this week, not been leaving the office much before 7.30pm, will mahe a great effort to get away early tonight.
Wish I was doing personal tax, did think of sending for the books, but don't have skype anyway.
Good luck :001_smile:0 -
I hope to be doing the Personal Tax in November, I am just checking with BPP that if I buy the ebook, how long I will have access to it. I purchased something from them before I only got access for a few months. Once I get confirmation back from BPP I will register as a student.0

I'm considering studying ATT, how much work are people finding it?0

Hi
I have completed ATT. There is a lot more involved than the tax units at AAT. I studied with Tolleys (who I recommend) and for each paper you will receive 3 lever arch files full of material.
However it is perfectly manageable if you have the commitment to do the studying. I did it over two years. One thing I would recommend is seriously consider what option paper you want to do.
If you are seriously considering it, I would say go for it as it improves your tax knowledge massively.
If I can help please send me a PM0 -
I am so glad I decided to do this course (even with today's hangover)
It really does go into much more detail than AAT.
Just thought I'd share that :mellow:0 -
I've been Looking to start studying again now I'm set up in business. It seems so long ago since I studied AAT that, although I have good working knowledge, I do feel there are gaps that need filling. I've had to bin my ACCA membership recently so that I could set up as MIP and ATT us my first choice. Am hoping to sit first paper in November, which reminds me, I'd better pull my finger out and register very soon. It's great that there will also be a group on here who are at same or similar stage0

Oh cool, good luck! Which paper are you looking at doing in November and where? (I'll be sitting VAT in Nov in Southampton).0

Done it!
I've finally made the decision and resigned from ACCA and registered with ATT. Ordered study texts for P1 & P7. Feels like a massive weight has been lifted now that the decision is made, thanks all for your advice in my other thread xx0 -
Wow, big decision! Well done for making it, I'm glad you feel like a weight has been lifted. Best of luck with your new studies!0

I was assuming I'd have to start with P1 but if I can take them in any order then I'm guessing I might start with Business Tax as it is more relevant to what I'm doing at the moment and the areas I feel I need to brush up on.
Just out of interest, how do you decide what 4 papers to sit? Looking at the syllabus I'd be interested in sitting them all lol!0 -

You have to sit 3 core papers personal tax, business tax and admin and ethics so no choice there. However if you've already sat and passed business tax at AAT you're excempt from it with ATT so onlt 2 core papers sit.
Only leaves you one choice then I'm afraid. Like you, I'm interested in a few papers, am sitting business tax higher skills in May bit would love to do VAT and Inheritance tax. I'll either do them as 2 extras or just buy the books and study but not sit the exam. Can't see how I'll get licence though for I Tax with no qualification and no experience so that may be a no no.
All I can say is think which paper would be most beneficial to you bearing in mind what you do now and what your goals are for the future. Good luck with your studies.0 -
As Jill says you can be exempted from the BTAP paper if you have Business Tax at AAT.I was assuming I'd have to start with P1 but if I can take them in any order then I'm guessing I might start with Business Tax as it is more relevant to what I'm doing at the moment and the areas I feel I need to brush up on.

There are 3 cores (2 if exempted from BTAP) and 1 option so pick the option that interests you most and helps you most. I have gone for VAT over higher business tax.
you can do exams in any order and as many as you want at one sitting, each pass lasts for 3 years so if you pass your last exam more than 3 years after your first one then you will have to renew your certificate of competency in the old one. Tis is £25 i think and you have to show CPD. I will have to do this as my last pass was NOV 08 and I haven't done ny exams since! Doing P tax in May and VAT November, then ethics in May 12.0
