Unit 8 -text books

Is it just me that is reading the Osborne Book wrong or just not understanding it - cause this book is not making much sense to me at the moment. Is there a better book I could look at ? or will it just all fall in place eventually like ECR did. Getting very confused with all these variances atm.
Any input much appreciated.

I'll see if I have the notes on variances from my tutor at college, but that was over a year ago so I can't guarantee I still have them
