Two students from UK academic institutions have won the top prizes in each category of the latest eFinancialCareers Investment Challenge, sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Almost 2500 students participated in the five-week individual challenge from more than 400 universities and business schools in over 25 European countries. Each student trader started with an initial £10 million fantasy fund which they could invest in the European markets to prove their trading prowess. Almost forty thousand trades were made over the five week-long competition.
Students competed in two year groups – those due to graduate in 2012, and those in 2013. The winning student in the 2012 year group was Teh Han Ming from the London School of Economics, with Thomas Lane from Warwick University being the best trader among the 2013 competitors.
As part of the prizes on offer, the top-ranking male and female students from the 2013 year group – Thomas Lane, and Ligia Mladin from Queen's University Belfast – have won a place at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Insight Week taking place this Easter.
James Bennett, Managing Director EMEA and APAC for eFinancialCareers.com, said:
“To see students from UK universities and business schools perform so well is a real testament not only to the calibre of the students, and also the standard of teaching. Success in a reality-based environment such as the Investment Challenge provides students with a strong grounding of what to expect from a career in the City, and offers prospective employers a better understanding of a candidate’s potential.”
The best traders in each year group managed to increase the value of their equity portfolios by more than 25%. Among the top 20 traders in the competition were students enrolled at London School of Economics, Imperial College London, Cass Business School, Reading University, Kings College London, Royal Holloway London, Birmingham University and Oxford University.
