Morning all,

I've recently been told my unit 10 is competent and am just awaiting official confirmation and my certificate.

My thoughts have turned to further study...has anyone any experience of the online course CIMA run themselves and any idea what centres around Birmingham/West Midlands allow external students to sit the exams.

Thanks in advance

Jo

    Hi

I don’t have any experience of the CIMA online courses, they were just being introduced when I was in the later stages of CIMA.

In terms of the exams, CIMA exam centres are all completely independent of CIMA courses. Whereas with AAT you either take the exam at your centre or a centre accepting external students, CIMA sets up its own exam centres and it's up to you to register for the exams independently regardless of you being on a course or self study.

I think you can find the details of exam centres on CIMA's website, but i'm pretty certain there will be one in Birmingham and around the West Midlands.

Thanks Neil that sounds great. I will have a looksie on the website. I'm just gathering information to try and convince my boss to fund CIMA :)

He has agreed to allow me the relevant work experience and to mentor me so thats one part out of the way just got to fund it now.

Again thanks for your quick response I appreciate it.

I contacted CIMA and they sent me the following email which I thought might prove useful to other students.

    "Dear Joanne,

Thank you for your call today regarding CIMA.

I can confirm that as you will be completing the AAT level 4 you will be exempted from the first 5 papers of CIMA which is the Certificate In Business Accounting.

    C03 Fundamentals of Business Mathematics

    C04 Fundamentals of Business Economics

C05 Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law

We will require your statement of achievement of certificate that states "Congratulations on completing the technician level"

You will then need to complete the following papers

    F1 Financial Operations

    P1 Performance Operations

    E1 Enterprise Operations

(Award CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting)

    F2 Financial Management

    P2 Performance Management

I have attached a link to our website where you will be able to view this in full details.

    http://www.cimaglobal.com/Students/2010-professional-qualification/

The duration of the course is generally about 3-5 years however there is no specific time limit as we encourage all students to complete the qualification at their own pace.

In terms of studying for the qualification this can be done through distance learning, A university/college or through correspondence.

However the cost of this varies on how you choose to study I have attached a link to the list of colleges that offer both distance learning and face to face tuition.

    http://www.cimaglobal.com/Students/2010-professional-qualification/Study-help-and-tuition/Colleges-that-teach-CIMA/

The books can be purchased from www.cimapublishing.com and the online study modules can be purchased from www.CIMAstudy.com

To register as a CIMA student you will need to complete the process over the phone or online, including paying the relevant fees using a debit/credit card.

The registration fee is £63 the first years annual subscription fee has been waived therefore if you register now there will be no subscription fee to pay until 01/01/2012

The professional exams take place in May and November, if you wish to sit exams in November 2011 please ensure that you register with us by 31st July 2011 we do have a special arrangement in place for AAT holders so you will not need to worry too much about that.

Once the exemptions are awarded, you will also be charged exemptions fees which will equal to the cost of sitting the paper, e.g.

Certificate level papers are £45 per paper.

I do hope that this has answered your enquiry and we look forward to welcoming you as a CIMA student."

Not sure if the links will work or not sorry

Sorry to sound like a bit of a thicko but does this mean I am exempt from the first 5 papers as I've completed AAT and then I only need to do 3 papers to tecnhically be CIMA qualified? Or does all of it need completing....

I've not even looked at CIMA because I've always planned on going down the ACCA route once I finally get my backside in gear!

    Hello,

AAT will exempt your from certificate level of cima (5 papers), you would then have to complete operational and mangement levels (6 papers), strategic (3 papers) and then finally topcima to become full cima qualified - so that would be a total of 10 from completing AAT.

Sorry to change subject a little but does anyone have any details on how/where to do topcima. I self studied strategic year and don't really know to much about where I should be sitting the final case study - I assume it is not the same as the exams ? Thank you

    Hi

I did TOPCIMA with Reed Business School but Kaplan and BPP do courses also. The exam is very different to the other exams and is about how you go about analysing the case as opposed to given correct answers to questions. BPP produce (or at least they used to) a "tool kit" that deals with how to approach the case and write your report.

Thank you Neil - will have a look into BPP. Not sure if I can afford any tuition myself, hopefully employer will support.

    Hi

Tuition for TOPCIMA (as it was called when I sat it) is more expnsive than other papers but is worth it if you want to pass.

Sorry I wasn't very specific... had a long day!

From the looks of that email, you get a CIMA diploma in management accounting after completing (or being exempt from) CO1-5 and completing F1, P1 and E1. Would that be classed as part qualified CIMA or a recognised qualification on its own? I know you all don't mind helping me out :)

    F1 Financial Operations

    P1 Performance Operations

    E1 Enterprise Operations

    Go for it! :)

There is a fair amount of crossover from AAT Tech to the operational exams, so you should do fine.

i am just waiting to see if my work will pay for all or some of it, if they are paying some of it they do it through kaplan.

i need to registered by 31 july to sit november exams so i am hoping they hurry up and make their minds up.

if they dont fund me then i will be buying the books from amazon and going it alone.

the exemptions alone cost £225, registration £63 but then if you still want to use MAAT after your name you would have to pay the reduced subscription to AAT which i beleive is £73 (just lower than the student registration fee)

I know it's not very much in comparison to the total cost but on the CIMA website at the moment, they're doing free registration for CIMA until 2012 and half price AAT membership if you want to continue with AAT membership too.
