Your own accounting records

I'm looking for a bit of insight from more experienced MIPs here please. I'd be interested to know what systems people use for their own accounting records. Do you use excel, Sage, custom software? So far I've just been using excel as I only have a few clients to keep track of and not too many expenses so far. However I'm not sure if this is the best way forward, I know what I intend to do but wanted to hear how others manage theirs to see if I can improve on my plans!
Thank you for any insights you can give me, sorry I'm deliberately not putting what I'm going to do on here just at the moment as I don't want to influence what people say!!

I use Sage because that's my bookkeeper prefers to use.
If I was doing it myself I would probably test out one of the new online offerings so I can evaluate it at the same time.0 -
Quickbooks 2005
It's the only thing I do on QB, but I've had it for years, know it inside out (enough for my needs) and am change-resistant.
If and when I change, it will probably be to Accounts Portal. Or VT T+0 -
Not being VAT registered I simply use excel.0

I use Quickbooks. Easy to use and keeps everything in order.0

Just transferred over from Sage to Xero.com ( signed up as a Partner).
So far so good0 -
I use sage but I am considering trying VT +0

VT
VT+ here! Only have to pay the license once and you get as many companies/sole traders as you like for it.0 -

Paul would you recommend Xero? Just became a partner so could use this.0 -

Thanks Monsoon. I'm sort of torn between Xero, VT T+ and Accounts Portal. I do like excel but I think an actual programme is going to be more informative.0 -
Definitely use an actual program.
I'd go with AP (cheaper than Xero and does the same job) or VT (integration with accounts production)0 -
I use quickbooks as it's what i purchased to do client work on and as dean said i wanted to familiarise myself with it. When I started out I also set up a business making wedding invitations and recorded all those transactions too, in minute detail to learn how to use the stock inventry system, so i still have account and item codes for rolls of ribbon and sparkly stickies knocking about!0

VT Transaction+/Final Accounts all the time for everyone! Unless they have their own package.
Started with it last year and I'm really pleased with it.
