Can someone help me? I have been reading an article in ACCA student accountant here
http://www2.accaglobal.com/students/student_accountant/archive/2011/122/3460756
and I am struggling to understanding why haphazard and random sampling is different. Can someone help me please?

Hi Glynis,
It's good to see you making use of the articles and having a positive attitude towards F8.
Imagine you were auditing a batch of 50 sales invoices, with random sampling you would use some kind of number generator to choose which invoices you were going to sample. For example it might tell you to test invoice numbers 5,12,18,21,35,48. This helps remove bias from the process.
With haphazard sampling, it would be up to you to decide which invoices to test.
Using random sampling, you are made to test the numbers generated, whereas with haphazard, you choose. This could lead to the auditor choosing to 'turn a blind eye' to particular items that s/he didn't want to perform further checks on.0 -
Thank you Richard. I tried to sign up to BPP classes but the only free ones are duringthe week so it's home study again for me

Either that or it's a marketing ploy?0

I hope a BPP representative will come onto the forum and refute it, but students of mine wanting CIMA courses which I am not running for Nov 2011 had the same replies.
You need a very friendly employer to be sponsored to attend at a time when you would normally be working.Sandy

I have just completed the P1 Taught Course with BPP by their offer of a free course as I am self funded and I took annual leave, which I understand is not always possible for everyone.
I have not been made to feel pressured to sign up for any further courses and have been treated no differently that anyone else on the couse so I dont feel it would be a marketing ploy.
The tutor has said that we are free to contact him if we have any problems and he will get back to us as soon as he can if he is not teaching.
I have always found them very helpful.0 -

Could you not do the daytime course? I have just looked at the BPP website, a taught course would only take 3 days to complete, for example in Birmingham 21/9, 22/9 and 10/10. This does not include the revision course though.
I'm not sure of your current employment position, but if could you take 3 days annual leave, or even unpaid leave, that would be a help to your situation.0 -
I have started the free F4 course and was surprised by how few people were there, only 8 altogether, some were on the free course and some had paid (or their employer had!). I'm very impressed so far, the tutor certainly knows his stuff and like has already been mentioned, says we are free to email him with any queries or problems. We also have the option to complete two practise exams that he will mark for us, which is more than we get at college! (I'm self studying F4 and taking F7 at college.) I assumed they're offering the courses for free in the hope that we sign up for more. I've found it a great experience as by the time I get to the P papers I might be self studying, and now know what I'd be paying for if I chose to go to BPP.0
