What qualifications are required to become a 'Qualified Accountant'?

Hi folks
Can someone please advice on what is a 'Qualified Accountant? For example, does an AAT qualified person consider himself/herself to be a 'Qualified Accountant' or would you need to study further up to chartered status?
Thanks

Hi Geek,
I'm sure this has been discussed before, and what I remember. if you are MAAT then you are a qualified accountant, but not chartered accountant.
with MAAT you can do a lot with accounts but someone who is chartered has a higher qualification.
I'm sure someone else will explain better than myself0 -
In a previous discussion it was said you should have the relevant accounting courses, but also the experience to be able to call yourself a qualfied accountant.0
