Sheriff's badge

Can anyone tell me what the sheriff's badge below someone's post does? The description when hovering over it says "add to this users' reputation"

It's rep; if someone likes your post they can approve it, Facebook equivalent of "Like", TSR equivalent of "thumbs up" etc. I repped you btw.

The sheriffs badge, which looks like a star, is on the bottom left (next to a triangle with an exclamation mark on it - used for reporting posts) on the line where you click to reply, reply with quote or multi-quote this message

Actually it does look more like a star. Too much Toy Story! So if I get lots of people 'repping' what I post will I get more of those green bar things or a super cool title like 'Lord of the Ledgers?'
