Offsetting training expenses against tax?

Can anyone advise me if a self employed translator can claim the cost of training (a recognised post grad translation certificated course) against earnings?

Depends. Does he already have a BSL/translating qualification? Have a look at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM42526.htm and see what you decide.
