Using a database system on a Mac

Does anyone use or know of a good database package that can be used on a Mac.
I have heard of Bento and Filemaker, but as I know very little about this area, would like some advice. I will be going to the Apple shop, as I have done before, but Apple do not sell this sort of package as far as I am aware.
I want to organise the clients in a small business - 350 max, into some sort of order, for ease. When the business first started I used Excel, which is okay, but not ideal. We need to keep costs down.
Any advice gratefully received.
