I have been asked to audit some accounts of a local gardening club ahead of their forthcoming AGM. As a member in practice can I do this? It is not a limited company only a club/society.

Should be fine, I contacted the MIP team a while ago to ask a very similar question. I wanted to know if I needed to add Independent Examiniation to my licence, but it wasn't necessary.
The club I worked for only had about 50 transactions in the year and just needed confirmation that their treasurer was acting correctly. They used the term audit as well, but that didn't mean they needed KMPG in. Call AAT if you have any concerns though.0
