Sponsoring Football Club

I have a client that has decided to sponsor the football club that is in the small village where he lives / works etc. Basically, he has purchased the kit and had it printed up with his business name splashed across it
a) can he claim the VAT on the invoice?
b) is it an allowable cost for Corporation Tax?
