Silly errors in BPP textbook

I have come across what appears to be a very silly error in my BPP ACCA P2 textbook - either that or I'm losing the plot! It states "Tax due on 20X8 profits ($120,000 x 30%) $40,000"

Last time I checked 30% of 120,000 was 36,000 not 40,000. Looks like they have taken a third, or 33%.

What's worrying about this is that I'm using this textbook to teach myself. Luckily I spotted this seemed to be wrong, but what else could there be in the book which is wrong that I'm not aware of and therefore teaching myself wrong! I would have thought this would have been picked up when it was proof read. And this is supposedly an ACCA approved textbook!

*will feel very silly if 30% of 120,000 is somehow 40,000 and will have to go back to Maths class*

I often wonder if they are proof read at all! I'm in the same boat as you, and when you're self studying it's easy to lose confidence when you disagree with a supposedly professional text, yet are convinced they are wrong. I think it was an F2 text where I thought what I was reading sounded familiar, only to realise that 3 or 4 pages had been reprinted over and over again. I also had an AAT text book which had all the chapters in the wrong order, yet the page numbers were in order. I've also seen blatantly incorrect basic maths like you describe. I've encountered it with both BPP and Kaplan texts so they are as bad as each other.

It's funny that you've just posted this as I am currently reading the Open Tuition F8 text and had literally only 5 minutes ago, commented to my husband that although it is excellent in summarising the syllabus in an easy to understand way, the grammatical and spelling errors are awful and it was doubtful anyone had ever proof read it! (Though as Open Tuition is free, I can hardly complain can I).

Oh, and I can confirm that 30% of £120,000 was £36,000 the last time I checked too!

I certainly don't think they are proof read.

When reading my auditing text last year there were a few obvious typo's etc.

I've also been frustrated in my current F9 studies with some of the hyper accurate rounding up which throws answers
out and some of the over complicated workings.
