Pre start up costs

I have a new client setting up a Spanish themed Bar/Restaurant. He spent several years in Spain returning this year to set up this business. He has set up a Limited company, and now wants to reclaim some of the costs he incurred as research for his business venture. This is an area I am unfamiliar with, I wondered if anyone has any advice for me? I started reading the HMRC guidance, which I will continue to do (but its a bit mind boggling to be honest), but if anyone has some experience of actually dealing with this then that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Thank you.
