If we were to start paying contributors writing articles for our website, who could be anywhere in the world, would we need to set them up as employees? Does anyone operate something similar?

It sounds like they could be self employed as they would use their own equipment and you would have little control over them. I'd suggest using the tool on the HMRC website to correctly determine their employment status (as the onus is on the employer to get it right!).0
