what is going on here in the first one the answer is to take the pension contribution of but in the second not to?

Does company = OPS which is directly taken off salary
and the second one is personal which extends the bands

Yes - personal pension contributions are relieved on the main income tax comp, not on the employment income calculation (as they are not employment-related).0
