Getting laughed at for being bad at mental arithmetic!

Does anyone else get mocked when they tell people they can't do mental arithmetic? I get it at work a lot, and also with friends. They will say "but you're an accountant" as if that magically means you should have a degree in maths!

Is this just because people don't really know what accountants do??

I already feel like an idiot for needing to use a calculator to do simple calculations, but to make it worse people think it's ok to question this because of some idea they have in their head of my job. Yet they don't question the bloke who works in stocks and also has to use a calculator...!

People are exactly the same with me, they always ask me complex math questions like I am going to know the answer... I need my calculator for absolutely everything!!

I would just ignore it if I were you. All you can do is do your job to the bext of your ability and after all, not everyone is good at maths!!!
