How to approach ACCA F3

I finished studying Financial Statements from AAT L4 and am hoping to combine this with ACCA F3 and possibly take the ACCA exam - I haven't yet joined ACCA or looked at the exam structure and differences yet so I'm not quite decided - I'm a little worried about starting ACCA as it's an incredibly long journey and I don't yet have a job or indication it is likely I can get one.
Anyway - If anyone has done similar do you have any tips on how to approach the study of F3, especially as I will have covered a large proportion of the text already and I'm struggling with motivation. I have the BPP book for ACCA and its huge. Could it best skimming and then doing all the test questions or could I miss something? Are there any differences between the two bodies which could catch me out? How do the exams differ? In fact I presume the ACCA exams are a lot longer with so much more to cover.
Oh and how long is it likely to take? - I haven't yet consolidated my learning as I was hoping to do this while making the transition but haven't had any issues answering the chapter questions in the AAT FS book. I have a trip coming up and hope five hours on a train will make a big dent in the F3 book.
Thanks,
