Proof of earnings for a mortgage

Hi there,
I've had a few people ask me recently whether or not they need a set of accounts from a fully chartered accountant in order to prove their earnings for a mortgage? Has anyone been in this situation who knows the answer? I'm wondering whether they just simply need profit and loss reports for the last few years of trading, regardless of some sort of official stamp.
Thanks in advance
Emm
