Placement Year?

Hi guys.
First a bit of background
I have completed AAT Level 4, during which I worked in an accounts practice for a year and a half, the accounts department of Local Government for almost a year, and then as the Accounts Manager of a small company. After completing level 4, I decided to go to university to study Accounting & Taxation, with a view to becoming a chartered tax advisor (after further study). This course has an optional placement year, and my questions, are really:
1) Since I already have work experience, is it worth me going to a placement? - I have been lead to believe that this is a good idea, since you can build relationships for subsequent graduate roles.
2) My ultimate aim is to become a tax advisor, Would applying for a placement with HMRC be a good idea? I had assumed it would be, but upon speaking with someone from the CIoT, he recommended I ask on here to see if anyone had experience in working with/for HMRC and whether doing so is a good idea.
I apologise for the essay, and thanks in advance to anybody who has taken the time to read this, let alone reply to it!
Thanks
Josh

Both our director of VAT services and one of our tax directors came up through HMRC, so on that basis it can't be a bad grounding...at least you'll know what they're looking for and how they work!0
