sage 50 professional cash accounting- payment allocation dates

I have started using cash accounting after years of standard accounting. When posting payments on account against an invoice with a later date. Do I allocate as at payment date or invoice date. As previously with standard vat accounting i always allocated payment against the invoice using the payment date. Any help please ?
