HMRC information request

Having issues obtaining information from previous accountant, specifically CT & CA comps for earlier periods.
So, thought I'd give HMRC a call asking if they could supply copies, foolishly thinking it may be quicker.
WRONG.
"It's quite an expensive process, apply in writing, detailing what actions have been undertaken to obtain the relevant information. It will take between 3-4 weeks....."
This is why we all adore HMRC.
