Self-Study or Distance Learning????

Hi,
I studied AAT Level 4 as a distance learner. Having looked into studying CIMA I realised it would literally be half the cost to buy the books and 'distance learn' that way.
Does anybody know what the actual difference between buying the books and buying a distance learning package are? It says you still get tutor support buying the books (which I never once used anyway!) so I'm a little confused!
