Last year I had a notice about applying for AATQB status. I thought, "why not?".
However, I have done no CPD, does completing lvl 4 AAT, and indeed studying ACCA (exam next week!) count as CPD? Or have I shafted myself?

I sure that I have read that if you are studying then you are completing your CPD requirements.
Not 100% though. Have you checked the CPD section of the AAT website?AAT Level 2&3 - 2016
AAT Level 4 - 2017
Personal Tax, Business Tax and External Auditing

Certificate Level - Jan 20195 -
I just had a look, I couldn't see anything specifically mentioning studying. However, I have not been chased by AAT for any CPD requirements. I have now created a record specifying my Career Goals of completing several of ACCA's F papers over the next 12 months.
I think I'm alright...0
