Tax overpayment adjustment on a self assessment

Hi all, apologies if this is a silly question! I am currently completing 4 consecutive self assessments for a client. She was both employed and self employed as a foster carer over the 4 years. Each year she has overpaid PAYE tax and in the final year received a refund for the lot.
I am confused where I enter the previous over payment on the relevant self assessments so it is carried forward to the next. I have entered the refund on the last one however without carrying over the previous amounts obviously it then shows she owes tax. Am I correct in thinking that as the refund was processed post 5th April 2017 I should not have actually entered it on the self assessment?
Can anyone provide any advice please?
